Coaching Into Care is 10 Years Old!

call center coach and responder

Coaching Into Care is celebrating our 10-year anniversary as a VA program! We started small and have grown to provide a national service to family members and friends of Veterans who want to support their Veteran in getting help for emotional struggles from their military service. We’re proud of what we do and are continually inspired by our callers who put in the hard work each day finding the best way to support their Veteran. In coming weeks, we will post stories of callers whose Veterans have achieved success in reaching out for mental health treatment.

Contact Coaching Into Care today for help in talking to a Veteran about getting mental health care: (888) 823-7458.

Meet a Caller - Lisa, Army Mother

What can happen when you call Coaching Into Care?

Read about “Lisa,” the mother of an Army Veteran and her experience with us.

#PTSD #AlcoholUse #SuicidePrevention

When Lisa called us, she didn't know where to begin. Her son, an Army Veteran who served recently in Iraq, had been diagnosed with PTSD, was drinking alcohol excessively, and had recently attempted to end his life. He also had been arrested for disorderly conduct. She had bailed him out of jail, but now what?

The call responder provided support and helped Lisa connect to the crisis line and local Suicide Prevention Coordinator and OEF/OIF team. A coach helped her understand PTSD and begin to change ways in which she was supporting his drinking behavior. The coach also helped her get support for herself and build a positive relationship with her son before asking him to make radical changes.

After six calls with a coach across a few months, Lisa began to feel empowered and hopeful. Her son stopped drinking and began resolving his legal problems. He has enrolled for care in a VA Medical Center and is planning to enter treatment and go back to school.

Just in time for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Beyond MST is a free, secure and private mobile app created for Veterans who experienced Military Sexual Trauma (MST) by the National Center for PTSD and the MST Support Team with input from MST survivors and other key stakeholders.

Beyond MST is not intended to replace professional care, but it can help survivors in and out of care find hope, connect to resources, and realize they’re not alone. It can also be used in a variety of ways to support MST-related treatment.
